Sound (talkie) version actually exists but it’s awful overdubbed sync-lipped, unwatchable, note however a newer recent HD restoration exists from exactly this RL silent copy (w/Italian intertitles) with piano music added over. Kindly note for future upgrade, thanks RL!

    • Mr.G. says:

I should say addition (not upgrade) as this original is one of a kind.

Hi Mr.G. I have watched the talkie version multiple times and love it, buy have heard that the silent version is superior. Hence my requesting it from Rarelust. However, silent doesn’t mean dead silent. Silent films have musical accompaniment. The Italian release from Cineteca Bologna has the Timothy Brock score. That’s what I expected on this download. But it seems to be dead silent. Pity.
I’ve redd that the best score is the one by Stephen Horne, where he actually allows Lucienne to be heard singing at the moment of her death. I love the symbolism. The advent of talkies signalling the death of Louise Brooks.

      • Mr.G. says:

I know what you mean, the end sequence looks awkward w/o singing voice but it’s poetic just as well as Louise Brooks’ stardom ended with the end of the silent film era, and what a farewell that is with no sound at all! Stephen Horne version is 108mins (cut), I’m sure RL will take good care should he come across this copy, I’m thankful just the same. Cheers. PS: On a side note, Brooks is the inspiration behind the comic character Valentina (Crepax), looks an identical Miss Europe.

There is no sound? Shouldn’t there at least be accompanying music?

totally silent .. other version is shorter french audio version

i read info in imdb review

We saw the silent version of this film, and it is quite simply shimmeringly beautiful. It’s quite hard to see how a sound version could have been created, since it is shot with pure silent technique

  3. ZakDrizzt says:

Thank you so much, Rarelust. That was quick. I took a chance requesting this. You are a star.

  4. Mr.G. says:

Is this the restored original silent version? Another rarity c/o RL.
