2013: Los Angeles
The Hollywood sign burns in the most prophetically symbolic image from one of the more relentlessly silly Carpenter exploits. I’ve often assumed (or maybe read) that Carpenter was happier when he wasn’t making horror flicks. I know he mostly dismisses Christine, which I consider his unsung masterpiece especially as I’m currently obsessing over it once again while reading Hell Hath No Fury: The Making of Christine.
Snake Plissken doesn’t really grab me. Strong and silent is more Clint’s game and I think Roddy Piper and James Woods were more likable and more badass in their respective Carpenter outings. The early CG has a kind of charm and so do the appropriately tacky set. Carpenter might have been hitting too many bongs, yet semi-consciously he still delivered a hippy trippy sense of where L.A. was actually going. Only shy a decade.
A friend of mine was totally convinced that he was watching a genuine T-boy and not Pam Grier with voice modulation.
Or you could have just said thanks for sharing.
It is a great pity that there are no extras with this – the single reason for watching it would be to see an extra on the basketball court scene.
A honest commentary would include the word “sorry” a lot.
An honest commentary would say he doesn’t really care what you think. If you didn’t the parody thats kind of a you problem.
Parody or no, it’s a damn silly movie. Always an enlightening comment from the just-worhip-John-Carpenter-and-shut-up crowd.
They had more fun making it than anyone had watching it.
Which is fine on one level and I am sure the payday was good, this is easily his third worst film above the utterly dire Village of the Damned and very bad Memoirs of an Invisible Man.
But if it’s true that Kurt Russell did the basketball shots live, why on earth not have them in the end credits like Jackie Chan would have done or as an extra?
