Not a good movie, and it drags, but a memorably strange one. Incongruous. It is set in the present day (the back then present day), but the ending in the tower is almost completely medieval or fantasy. And not an inspired or inspiring fantasy either. I can recommend Wegener in “Alraune,” though, in a similar role.

Thank you for such a great upload, I didn’t even know this had an HD release! Quite a 100-year old treat this Spooktober!

It’s an upscale. Redwood Creek Films were heavily criticised for calling it “4k restoration”. It’s simply an upscale of Warner DVD – and it looks it.

This silent movie, which never gained the cult status it deserves because until quite recently it was believed to be lost, is the first of a surprisingly small number of films inspired by the life and legend of Aleister Crowley. It was adapted from a 1908 novel of the same name by W. Somerset Maugham, a writer not normally associated with the horror genre. Maugham knew Crowley, and found him repulsive yet so oddly fascinating that he was inspired to write a dark fantasy about a man who really was the occult supervillain Crowley ‘self-idetified’ as. Crowley hated the book so I don’t suppose he liked this movie much either, but as horror films from that era go it’s one of the least silly, and compares favourably with the hugely overrated ‘Dracula’.

“because until quite recently it was believed to be lost,”

Quite recently? I had a bootleg of this on VHS in the mid 1990’s.
