Have to say — the slow build and atmosphere is fantastic, the flawed characters are all sort of swimming in their regrets, trying not to reveal their deep inability to connect, and all that late 60’s ennui things that are part of “art movies”.

However it loses momentum when characters start acting against type and becoming irrational for strange not apparent reasons.
There is some reveal, but given who the characters are, the hystrionics of the highly-emotionally-charged scenes hit like they are just plot-devices, and not what those characters would do.
I think the source material probably clued more into the internal thoughts of the characters, something really hard for cinema to do, but I don’t think they pulled it off at the end. Some might disagree and think it’s brilliant, but I’ve seen Michael Caine at his best and this wasn’t that.
Shot beautifully, a look into the late 60’s rich people world of dirty social climbers trying to get there from the outside, and settle scores that run deep. worth seeing, and some good dialog.

Even if this didn’t have Michael Caine and a great caper, I’d be excited just to hear the John Barry soundtrack, especially with a Shirley Bassey-sung theme.

Thanks, RL! This might be an interesting piece. Not least since movie historians David Del Valle and Daniel Kremer claim it’s “very weird”. Probably right up a lot of enthusiasts’ alleys. Something to hope for!
