My thoughts on the theatrical: Unicorns and unibrows lurk in Ridley Scott’s fantastical pic, a sometimes visually stunning eighties misstep. Tim Curry’s Darkness is overwrought and kind of disappointing compared to the more frightening Pennywise or Frank-N-Furter, and he isn’t even the most sinister of the creatures Rob Bottin designed here. Curry’s uncanny, grotesque triple-turn in Tales From the Crypt’s “Death of Some Salesmen” — if you know, you know — remains the true stuff of legend. As for adult-themed fairy tales, I much prefer Neil Jordan’s The Company of Wolves, which is more coherent, daring, and Grimm.
