  1. Kinga says:

I love this post, thanks, but I think the commentary is not included. :)

  2. Johnny S. says:

The beginnings of the Mary Sue macho woman girlboss.

    • BonnieBarko says:

It suits Geena Davis very well. Just watch “The Long Kiss Goodnight”. Also I wouldn’t agree with the girlbosses 100 per cent. The industry pushed lesbians and girl-bosses, but just for the fashion of it. In fact they are (mostly) nothing without their environment and co-stars – just another promotion gag – just for example: The female detective in “Only Murders in the Building”, she’s loud, she’s big, and lesbian, showing a baby through the scenes like the housewives in the 1960s comedies, how progressive….

  3. Mr.G. says:

Though my fav Geena Davis is on the wacky Earth Girls Are Easy/1988 watching this on TV she’s so hyperactive, chased, running in the wild, hanging from some rocks above the sea, more like comics character the likes of Corto Maltese. Modine is cool though.

    • BonnieBarko says:

…and I though this was one of her best performances, alongside with The Long Kiss Goodbye (1998) and Thelma and Louise_(1991). Beetlejuice was comic-like for sure (and sloppily executed – and not one of Tim Burton’s best works at all).

  4. Robbytag says:

Renne Harlin staked his career and money to promote his wife. Sadly it bombed terribly, and destroyed careers of both .

Rene Harlin director of movies like Cliffhanger and Die Hard did not recover from this. and became an also ran than a star director he was.

Will download the add ons to see his interviews

    • Tony says:

Indeed, one of the most devastating bombs ever. I never watchee this final film, might have to see out of curiosity. Think it ended Carolco Studios.

      • J says:

Carolco was already in deep trouble, but this was the nail. The studio was imploding while this was in production.

      • Field78 says:

Even worse: because of this bomb, we never got to see Crusade with Arnold Schwarzenegger directed by Paul Verhoeven. Everything was ready to go but at the 11th hour, Carolco couldn’t finance two big, expensive films, so they canceled Crusade and greenlit Cutthroat Island. A wrong bet that eventually became their downfall.

      • BonnieBarko says:

I’d like to contradict, Cutthroat Island isn’t a bad film at all, bit generic and Diznee-like, but not bad, Modine and Davis did a good job, but Pirates were out of fashion, then drag-queen Johnny Depp appeared with the Pirates of the Carribean-franchise) Also it didn’t bomb at the box-office, this is a myth coming from the going-down of Carolco Pictures soon after. Carolco did a lot of cool films from “Futureworld” over “Rambo”, “Red Heat”, “Total Recall” to “Basic Instinct” and “Terminator 2 Judgment Day” just to mention a few. “Cutthroat Island” did NOT end Carolco (It didn’t cost much), it simply marked the end of an era (DVDs and VOD took over).
        Nevertheless, thanks for sharing.

    • J says:

Uh what are you talking about? He made Deep Blue Sea and Long Kiss Goodnight AFTER Cutthroat Island. He was hired for big budget films for years after this. It wasn’t until big budget films like Driven (box office bomb), Exorcist The Beginning (moderate success), Hercules (bomb), among a slew of other films did his career fall back on lower budgeted action and horror films.

      • Robbytag says:

indeed . all i am saying that a director who Rivalled hollywood biggies with Cliffhanger and Die Hard 2 became an also ran.
He never recovered and we lost a good action director

        • BonnieBarko says:

Cliffhanger was an outdated vehicle and Die Hard 2 was not a good movie, simple as that. It lacked originality, which is indeed hard for any follow-up to a surprise-hit at the box-office – I bet it was a tough job. But, it’s also a fact that follow-ups usually suck.
Renny Harlin had some big successes, but he’s still in the biz, no end of career, nothing particularly special, too. Cant’t expect every director to be top notch all the time, right?

      • BonnieBarko says:

Agreed. Cutthroat Island isn’t bad at all imo, bit Diznee family-film-like, but not bad.
