I wonder if Marty Scorsese would consider this cinema? Personally I do, because I remember seeing it on the big screen at the old Granville 7 in Vancouver back in 1992. Before the days of IMDb, and when we only had resources like Leonard Maltin’s annual Movie and Video Guide, I remember how much in denial my friends were that a Meatballs 4 even existed. Now, “to the rescue” we have a serviceable amount of mostly negative Letterboxd reviews as proof positive that it does indeed exist, and that a nerdy Patrick Dempsey and the ghost of deceased porn goddess didn’t end the Meatballs legacy.
As bad as it seemingly wants to be, I found myself impossibly giddy going back to this one. I’ve now watched this three times in my life from start to finish, yet I’ve still not seen 8 1/2 or Gone with the Wind. This is easily the best of the dubious Meatballs entries, even it it more closely resembles a Ski Patrol or Ski School sequel.
Corey was just out of rehab, but he’s definitely at his most obnoxiously Feldman-esque and fans should like him here. It kind of represents the end of his career as a marquee name, with I think only Tales From the Crypt Presents: Bordello of Blood getting a major release after this. Sarah Douglas is on hand as kind of a dollar store version of Joan Collins, and Jack Nance gets one of his last sizable film roles before his tragic passing. Speaking of tragic, legend has it that his ex porn star wife committed suicide during the making of this movie. Jack returned to the set to deliver a heartfelt moment where he is clearly channeling his own grief. It’s pretty out of place in a movie that should be best remembered as one of the last great T&A summer camp romps. As a fan of the thong bikinis from this period, it doesn’t disappoint.
They should have licensed that goofy Meatballs theme song from the Bill Murray classic to play during the many water skiing sequences. Or at the very least, they could have thrown Corey another bone and had him record a new version. He’s got the deep bass voice required. We have to settle for him stealing a dance sequence that is almost worth the price of admission, even if the director begged him not to do it.
