The original play was about hippies in NYC in 1967 and one of them gets a draft notice and he has to decide what to do, since there is a good possibility he will be sent to Vietnam and get killed. Does he go, does he try and go to Canada, does he go into hiding, does he go to jail instead? The movie is very different from the play and the producers of the play have disowned any association with the movie. I recommend trying to find a video of the actual play on the internet and see that and then watch this movie and decide which version for yourself which one you like better.
Hair (1979) is one of the few time a movie about a play has very little in common with it’s source material.
