Wow. I thought this to be some kind of cheap, goofy, time-travelling mess, but it is actually an excellent movie. The acting is great, photography is awesome (with one or two brilliant bursts in composition or camera movement), and the sound design is also particularly interesting (with no sound all of a sudden in the middle of an action scene with very soft music starting to play, creating a sense of detachment from the brutal nature of the scene). Not to mention some kind of strange humour, even in the most dramatic moments.
I still do not know whether the director was trying to promote the (since fallen) greatness of Shogun-era Japan, to simply present a story of smeared friendship and thirst for power, or to denounce the futility of war and violence… but what a journey.
I strongly recommend watching this. A hidden gem along the same line as Knightriders I guess…
Thank you Rarelust.
