Anime as well had pixelated or blurred genitalia in Japan. The explicit versions were distributed to overseas markets.

  2. Gene says:

I always found it most curious (culturally, politically, legally) that showing genitals or pubic hair in live action was strictly banned within Japan, yet in Anime ALL was allowed. For explicit live action, it was export market only for domestically made porn. And the Yakuza were speculated to have some involvement with that . . . although there are quite a few major companies and distributors behind it. In the few exceptions of serious or ambitious content that included some hardcore scenes, a director like Oshima had to film it outside the country.
    WHY this great divide ?

This has been the way in Japan for explicit real porn. A shame but i think it will take another generation to change this, if at all. By nature, most Japanese are deviously into extreme porn and I think it is because of this ban on showing pubic hair and explicit sex. Something akin to the forbidden being more desirous. To bypass this ban, they show creatures with tentacles doing actual penetration.

The laws against obscenities applies to all form of media (and beyond) in Japan, so live action and fictional. Genitalia are censored when domestically distributed, while the uncensored versions are usually available for the rest of the world. I thought this was common knowledge? I didn’t know about Oshima’s work, but I understand he had to produce the movie outside Japan because the intent was to distribute the movie uncensored in Japan, as a form of protest against those laws.

Pubic hairs nowadays are less censored, since the laws aren’t particularly explicit, and their interpretations changed during the years. Pubic hairs can be seen occasionally in both live action, anime and manga. Can’t speak for live action of the time, but I remember pubic hairs on Miura or Nagai’s stuff, for example, albeit with “barbie crotches”, if needed. So the main difference is that you can’t use stylized depiction of the genital area in live action content, so you have to cut as much as possible as precaution. (Also fictional minor are treated different from real life ones for some reason, which is the probably the only real divide between live and not, but that’s another topic.)
