You should check it out. It’s a cult classic & has a lot of cultural significance. It was written, co-produced, scored, edited, directed by and starring Melvin Van Peebles. No studio would finance the film, so Van Peebles funded it himself, shooting it independently over 19 days, & performed all of his own stunts. It’s also an example of “guerilla film making”. The film had a budget of only $150,000 which Van Peebles put up, himself. (Bill Cosby loaned Van Peebles $50,000 to finish the film, when he ran out of money) He couldn’t afford to hire a fire truck for one scene, so he called the fire dept. and falsely reported a fire. (just to got a shot of the fire truck) The film went on to become a huge success, grossing $15 million. In 2004, Mario Van Peebles directed and starred as his father in Baadasssss!, a biopic about the making of Sweet Sweetback. In 2020, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

I have been wanting to see this for years. I hope this is the American version rather than the reportedly heavily cut British version.
This version contain the uncensored infamous opening pre-title scene.
I had seen this years ago on VHS, and noticed the difference later in a DVD version. Rarelust wins again with a top quality upgrade!
