Just – Wow!’. This is a series shot in English, mainly in the studio, by the British Broadcasting Corporation. However, by immaculate casting and plainness of storytelling and characterisation, it captures Simenon’s world perfectly. Gabin will always hold the crown; and recently Depardieu made a huge impression as the aged Maigret; but Rupert Davies is the perfect Maigret. Quiet, wise and melancholy.
