To my view this is the definitive Stoker Dracula.
The script is very faithful to the novel. Louis Jordan perfectly captures the sinister romanticism of the Count without ever overplaying it, and Frank Finlay as his nemesis Van Helsing is all class. The entire production from a fine ensemble cast to the production and design teams are at the top of their collective games.
There are gorier, hammier and more graphic interpretations and variations of the Dracula myth, but this is the best by some considerable margin.

This Dracula film was the most faithful according to Cinemassacre:

Right… but Lee was so much scarier… It is always a weird-o House of Hammer smash up… but very few people are capable of been physically threatening (especially as old as he was)… but I am telling you that something (probably the ex-spy thing in him) always showed through and I always felt that he could kill you just as soon as look at you… and he wasn’t suave… he wasn’t nice… He was downrigh imperial… You meet the decree and die or you don’t and die worse.

Being faithful doesn’t have to lack those qualities. Jack Palance’s Dracula was a beast.

Speaking as someone who likes the Hammer Draculas a lot, they still leave me craving different takes on the material.

I watched this version, circa 1979. To my memory, this was the BEST version of Dracula I’d seen and Louis Jourdan was creepy good!
Thanks to you, RL, I can watch and enjoy this again, to see if it’s truly as good as I remember.
