The return of Coffin Joe, the sequel to ‘At Midnight, I’ll Take Your Soul’ is a worthy, ambitious follow-up that starts immediately where MIDNIGHT ended. I like how the doctors managed to fix CJ’s eyes, which were popping out of the socket at MIDNIGHT’s conclusion. Most agree these are Marins best films. This was released in ’67, 3 years after MIDNIGHT but that has no bearing on the look or consistency of CJ’s character. He’s still that unique mixture of Nietzschean villain and Marques de Sade. What makes CJ stand apart from other ‘Embodiments of Evil’ is Marins’ philosophical rationale for his behavior, instilling antihero qualities in the mix. I think that’s what has propelled the mystique and made interest in Marins and Coffin Joe endure and even flourish. There’s a bit of The Joker in Coffin Joe. I also like Marins ‘Awakening the Beast’ quite a bit. A somewhat bizarre and daring (for 1970) pseudo-documentary or mockumentary loaded with sexual perversion and drugs. It actually has some vignettes that visually suggest Alejandro Jodorowsky and Luis Buñuel. I’m on a Marins binge now… I hold Rarelust personally responsible!
