For anyone interested in finding the infamous “uncut” version with the graphic sex scenes it’s only available via the first VHS release from 1980, from Magnetic Video. That is the original 108 minute version which is otherwise a “lost film.” For some reason all other versions are censored, including the blu ray.
Seems odd that despite being classified R for US cinemas, the film was then cut for DVD and Blu-ray releases. I’ve seen the 145 minute version, and am very curious as to what might have been cut from the sex scenes that would add a further three (!) minutes to the running time. There’s a masturbation scene, but I can’t imagine how much more graphic it could be without being considered porn, and the while the lengthy main sex scene seems pretty tame really, I’m not sure what could have been cut from it, other than showing full-frontal male nudity, but I doubt Kristofferson would’ve allowed that. The tea rooms scene seems to be directed more as suggestive than intentionally explicit, so again I can’t imagine what might have been possibly cut from this, other than an under the table shot showing his hand up her skirt, but that would hardly be any more graphic than the early masturbation scene. Do you know exactly what stuff was cut from the 108 minute version?
I was 14. There was Sarah Miles, doing what she does in the mirror. A seminal moment in my life (pun intended).
Great movie, based in Yukio Mishima novel.
