I don’t want to spoil anything, but I love how the director did the ending. It’s like they had a solid ending, but wanted something else, and found a way to incorporate them both.
Definitely check this out. It’s up there with PLAY DIRTY and other espionage style WW2 films, and Malcolm McDowell chews up the scenery, and the scenery is the Pyrenees Mountains!
And just to let you know, the French blu-ray and apparently all streaming services have the unedited ending incorporated into the movie (which runs at 1:41:23, instead of the edited ending Kino Lorber released with runs at 1:38:02). The incorporated uncut ending also has better video quality than the extra from the US Kino Lorber blu-ray.
I compared both versions, and all violence is intact until the ending, which is the only difference.
Once again, just to let you know, the unedited version with the full ending is on the French blu-ray and streaming services.
The edited ending runs at 1:38:02, and the unedited ending runs at 1:41:23. Everything is the same but the ending, which is in better quality with the French blu and streaming services than what Kino Lorber offers.

I agree. After watching this with some friends a few weeks ago, I looked up “Siskel and Ebert’s” review of this, and they made it “The Dog of the Week”. They did not care for it at all… which befuddled me. I watched them when I was a kid in the 70’s, and while a lot looked up to them for an honest review, even then there were times that made me scratch my head as to where they were coming from.
