I wasn’t going to bother downloading this – after all, how many poor quality pirate copies of extremely obscure spaghetti westerns do I really need? – but there was something about the plot which was both strangely familiar and so weird it couldn’t possibly be true. So I I looked it up, and yes, improbable though it may seem, this really is a spaghetti western remake of Mozart’s opera ‘Don Giovanni’.
Unfortunately, ‘Django the Bastard’ has as little connection with ‘The Magic Flute’ as it does with any of the other 50 or so movies about gunfighters called Django, and ‘A Town Called Bastard’ isn’t a gritty reboot of ‘The Marriage of Figaro’, but if there are any other spaghetti westerns with or without titles containing the word ‘Bastard’ that were secretly written by Mozart, I’d love to know!
This is a classic Italo-Western, with an interesting dramatic story. Someone went to a lot of trouble to make this version because it doesn’t seem to be available commercially. Very watchable, widescreen print, recorded off a Spanish tv broadcast, with an added on English language track from another source. Great custom job. I saw this done before, for the title “Opium Connection” with Ben Gazzara. Sincere thanks to the guys who make these lost films available again.
