One of Uncle Jess’s better ’80s movies, with an opening shot that would be studied in film schools if it wasn’t done by Jess, and didn’t make people go “OMG, not another zoom lens!”
the shot is great, and I adore Franco’s zoom – lots of times he uses it instead of cutting. So takes a super long. Basically, in this movie, each scene is pretty much one take (I haven’t seen it for awhile). And there’s a like 10-minutes scene where you see Jess behind the camera in the reflection because he’s shooting through balcony window directly staring at it, and he cannot not know we’ll be able to see him as a ghostly silhouette, and it doesn’t even spoils the movie. The movie is awesome.
