  1. DJF says:

One of the greatest films ever made, almost entirely unknown in the west. Engrossing and heart-wrenching, it follows a non-relationship over the course of nine years until a real, historical event makes possible a moment of utter vulnerability that MAY lead to a love story after the movie ends.

Maggie Cheung’s performance is astonishing from beginning to end.

The life and career of Chinese mega-star Teresa Teng is woven throughout the film, and it explains who she was well enough that even people who have never heard of her will understand the impact she has on the characters and story. (Teng’s first single, “The Moon Represents My Heart”, which is heard in the film also, is arguably the most important pop song in history.) The original Chinese title, “Tian Mi Mi”, is the title of one of her most recognizeable songs (changed for the English title because it would have no resonance with English-speakers), and star Leon Lai provides an excellent cover version for the closing credits.

I requested the movie but you said it all, Sir. Thank you so much for your well said words, which I entirely quote (except for “The Moon” being the most important pop song in history, well, no…).

And thanks again to you, RL, for one of the great titles of your infinite catalogue.
