What McCarthy and co. did then is still reverberating throughout US politics, and the world at large. Powerful stuff.
Thanks for uploading this film, RL.
Yes, Philosophicus, and yet, Henry Kissinger is still alive and kicking, the blood of millions on his hands, and a generally high and favorable public profile. What a world!
was alive hehe
RL, if you also have nice HD copy of Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove (1964), with the McNamara interview in the extras, would be awesome to upload.
Peter Boyle portrayed the monster in Young Frankenstein (1974) here aptly portrays McCarthy. Scary!
Sadly for the critics of Senator McCarthy, recently decrypted Soviet Venona Transcripts indicate that Senator McCarthy was actually entirely correct about the extent of Communist infiltration of the army, academia, the State Department, the executive branch, congress, etc. It turns out that he was actually an example of the Biblical proverb “a prophet is not without honor, except in his own country.” (Mark 6:4) See, just as one example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Americans_in_the_Venona_papers
Philo – that’s a big overstatement. McCarthy was a closeted habitually drunk antisemite who used the red scare to boost his own power. Read up on all of his corrupt behavior (Schine, lied about his military “career”, war profiteering, Waffen-SS defender, John Paton Davies Jr, and much more).
Like my grandpa (WW2 soldier and fervent anti-communist) always said: Joe did huge damage to anti-communism for personal gain, plus the guy was just an a-hole.
Since you mention the Verona list: compare the accused in the Tydings Committee against the Verona list, it’s a nothingburger.
