Honestly, I have no idea how anyone can enjoy this phenomenal comedy without a knowledge of the language. I don’t believe that any English translation can convey all funny jokes. Example? There is a repeating scene where a teacher calls student names to check if they are present or absent. One student’s name is “Hliník”, which directly means “Aluminium”. If you think it’s a strange name, bear in mind, that it is quite possible to have such name in the Czech language (it’s kinda funny but not impossible). In every such scene, some student always shouts “Hliník has moved to Humpolec”, as he doesn’t pay any attention (Why? Because instead of paying attention, he’s filling some lotto tickets. Btw. Humpolec is real town name.) It all means that the student is just missing. In much later scene, on the chemistry course, the teacher shouts that a chemical reaction will produce “Aluminium” – in this case, it means real chemical element, not anyone’s name. However, the same student shouts (in a same way without paying any attention) – “Hliník has moved to Humpolec.”, again.
Surely, when written it doesn’t seem that funny. There are many more such smart and gentle jokes in the movie.
