Guccione did a very good job of integrating the hardcore and avoid being overly gratuitous, so that the hardcore sex contributes to the story instead of taking the viewer out of it. Even what’s called the over the top orgy scene gives one an idea what they would’ve experienced.
This is more than just porn, too. Malcolm McDowell creates such a Caligula that we know why he had to be killed.
