I saw the original 177 minute Roadshow Version on the first release. It had an Overture and Intermission with music and a large format Souvenir Program to go with it. While this posted version gets the overall general outline it’s missing the complex Flashback/Flashforward/Return to Present structure of the original. This reduces everything to a series of flashbacks only. There were also many additional details concerning Duncan’s early days. And, of course, there was more screen time of Vanessa Redgrave which is always a good thing. NBC released a 168 minute version (with nudity and adult content cuts) shown over two nights in the early 1970s. It was broadcast twice and then that version disappeared along with its source predecessor. The 153 minute Director’s Cut (which was never released on disc and can still be found on used VHS) restored some footage but retained the simplified flasback structure of all cut versions. The 177 minute Roadshow Original needs a full restoration. It was a radically structured Memory Play with fantastic Jocelyn Herbert art design (in evidence here) and Vanessa Redgrave’s evocative and at times stirring central performance.
I believe the 168 minutes version was only shown for a very short run when it was first released in 1968,and then recut and lost forever. At least all theatrical and other media prints I’ve seen are this very same one.
Noted with thanks, we’re already counting 3-4 versions, next will be 158mins “restored” before finally unearthing the 168minns. That’s how things work. Duncan is as groundbreaking as Stravinsky, his three ballets for Diaghilev created riots when first shown, from Stravinsky you get influences up to Zappa/Mothers, so some …minor significances there.

It’s the 1969 UK cut-version retitled in US The Loves of Isadora, right? At least 3-4 cut versions with target audience in mind: partisan-erotic-horror (Bugatti), is the original 168mins ever issued on DVD/BR? Or run-down by Bugatti?

Even if I don’t share any of Duncan’s beliefs or points of view, the film paints a fascinating portrait of her personality and talent, and should be viewed as a artwork for its photography and production design,besides Redgrave’s excepcional performance.
