Thank you!
I wish Johnny Depp HAD acted in a good supernatural film. “Supernatural” is such a glib and misleading word, just like “religious”… We can talk about ordinary reality and things beyond it. Tom Cruise had his “Interview With a Vampire,” Keanu Reeves had his “Matrix,” Robert Loggia “Innocent Blood,” Michelle Pfeiffer “Wolf,” Nastassja Kinski “Cat People.” Well, this was not it for Depp.

Polanski’s psychological horror trilogy (REPULSION, ROSEMARY’S BABY, THE TENANT) are 3 of my favorites of all time. I was excited to see this opening weekend in the theater. For the time, the title sequence is great and unravels like a video game maze. unfortunately, at the end of the film, I felt disappointed. It plays out like a black comedy/mystery but the introduction of supernatural elements tends to be silly at times. It does have an excellent cryptic tarot card motif that adds to the atmosphere and kept my attention throughout. Nevertheless, it has a great cast and is a nice addition to the Rarelust catalog!
I’m just wondering why you found the supernatural elements “silly” in “Ninth Gate” but not in “Rosemary’s Baby,” especially considering the supernatural elements are almost identical; a coven of creepy old people, performing Satanic ceremonies in order to invoke the Devil; the old people are even naked in both films…Did you mean the supernatural elements in “Ninth Gate” were silly for the time in which the film was made (1999)? I’m curious because I think of this as one of the Great titles of Polanski’s career, and I also think it is greatly underrated….
This is one of the last great Polanski flicks. Depp, Langella, and Polanski in times before they were embroiled in overblown scandals. I miss these times.
Don`t forget to name the great and prolific Jack Taylor in the credits though a minor role here, true valuable actor from the genre!
Polanski drugged and raped an underaged girl. You think that’s overblown? Fewer movies, more reality for you.
Intersting enough, she forgave him and wanted no charges to be pressed at all. I am not siding, just find it an interesting piece of info.
Like a dream come true, thank you so much for this great modern horror film!
