This didn’t turn me on when I watched it first, but I believe it will now. I identify with these torturers now. All I regret is that the movie pulls its punches. There is not much actual gore or sex here.
I’ve heard of it and, like with Human Centipede and A Serbian Film, I know where to draw the line. I don’t know how they got the actors to film this, but I can only imagine they held their families at gunpoint.
An all time classic of depravity.
Believed to be (and I quote) “The Most Controversial Motion Picture Ever Made”, which, in real life, led to the assassination of it’s director, Pier Pasolini.
Trust me–you will need about 3 or 4 viewings (if you can get through them) to get past the shock value (if you can).
“Depraved” is merely a ‘compliment’ for this film. Hell–the “Queen” of the Naziploitation Genre, “ILSA, SHE-WOLF OF THE SS”, in my view, was ‘dethroned’ after seeing this film (and, THAT’S Saying A Lot!).

Regardless Criterion poster this looks like FHD downscale of the July 2026 4K uncut/restored Wicked Vision German release which includes the complete Gottfried Benn poem scene (submission within marriage) 42mins into the film previously banned (fascism hides in family values and hatches from there). for the record, this is released right after the Bauhaus centennial (presently attacked by traditionalists), and with social media locally banned under 16, the premises shot are abundant with symbolism from cold detached art-deco to modern disfigurative art on the walls, interns (society’s youth) are religiously preached with perv readings daily, and more, all highly contemporary as a failed (social/religious) leadership statement, stronger than Orwell (1984).
Last movie from Pasolini and a master piece of movie history, Salo is very important one. But… One of the hardest movie I ever saw. If you are looking for eroticism or porno, beware! It is not. It is a philosophical and political film about the horror of fascist dictature. For most of people I met that was viewing this picture, it was ultra violent and moving mind. Because the hardest of the piece is not about special effects (quite even cheap looking sometimes), gore pictures or so. No. It is about the spirit and the art of the movie itself. So, if you watch it, be ready to something not always seducing, maybe exactly the contrary. Some people said Pasolini was assassinated because of this last work. Well, we will never know, besides circumstancies of his death are more looking about pathetic murder than assassination… Who knows, anyway. A very strange movie in it’s way, as no one else.
