I’ve always been curious how much of Marins’ own philosophy fueled his alter ego ‘Coffin Joe’. Marins made a couple of films that allow CJ to narrate and set-up the theme even though the scenarios don’t include a physical appearance – Coffin Joe is there in spirit. CJ spouts his perspective on violence and perversion (mostly sexual) and how he sees a correlation to drug use. A group gathers to debate the issue with the other speakers appalled at the visual examples CJ puts forth. For 1970, this film is a fascinating piece of subversive exploitation served up in mockumentary style and is rarely discussed. While not an actual horror film, horrors abound and fans of Alejandro Jodorowsky, Luis Buñuel, and Fernando Arrabal may find this of interest.
