I have seen this one before and it’s freaking awesome. Fans of solid old movies rejoice. There’s a small genre which I would call supernatural or twilight zone noir, (think Repeat Performance from 1947 and Alias Nick Beal from 1949) and this belongs alongside (or, in 1946, sandwiched between) those two classics. The tension mounts, the plot twists, the gambling god blesses winnings and the gambling god destroys lives, and all three leads are fantastic in a complementary fashion, Greenstreet and Lorre especially. It’s got some heavy predestination themes, but they play out in really surprising and ironic ways. I loved it.
