These last months’ worth of brilliant horror actor Boris Karloff generically titled but quite witty and smart mad scientist movies have been great – it’s like Karloff’s riffing on a driven genius fetish, sometimes he’s driven mad through persecution or personal loss, sometimes as in this one, he’s just born that way, but you know, no matter what, innocent people are going to die for science. Is it murder though? “You people call everything murder!” he says halfway through The Man With Nine Lives, and it’s hard not to sympathise with him, at least at that moment. Surreal storyline (Cryogenics!), underground laboratories with corpsicle-stocked freezers, some truly beautiful imagery and great suspense, and an economical running time. These movies are timeless, fun and gruesome, and one can only hope that the programming train of thought at rarelust will run to The Devil Commands, which finishes on a supremely macabre tableau of insane paranormal corpse-power. It’s Frankenstein on steroids! And nobody in the village will understand! Ha ha ha ha ha!
