This was truly a “rare bird” in film history, very hard to find for the longest time. Well presented in a very documentary style, it is refreshingly different — only edging into (marginal) SF territory late in the running time. I seem to recall it being seen in the U.S. only in a very cut down, English-dubbed version, in Saturday afternoon “creature feature” tv slots, which left very little notion as to what the film actually was. An unfortunate and brief distribution fate . . . and then it simply disappeared for several decades. To find it here at this late date, complete and with this picture quality, seems only short of miraculous. (I recognized a few of the actors, one of whom had a significant role in “The French Connection.”)
