Maybe it will work and maybe it won’t, 50/50 Those are horrible odds to bet your life on.
This very good movie is based on an historical fact; the early torpedoes used by the US Navy in WWII did not work very well, and needed a lot of work to make them effective. A lot of people risked their lives to deploy weapons that were useless in combat.
