Not a vanity project of Bob’s AT ALL.
He took the offer at one of the lowest emotional points of his life, essentially believing he was already washed up and that his career was on an irredeemable downward slide.
He was offered a TON of money, and the director sweet-talked Bob into doing it by bringing him a big bottle of rare whiskey and getting him shit-faced at his house in Malibu (back when Dylan was drinking).
Bob knew it was a piece of junk, saying as much in later interviews, and stayed HAMMERED on coke and booze during much of the shoot. The director died on the eve of the film’s European premiere, which relieved him from seeing the reviews, which kept it from receiving a theatrical release in the USA.
There are some brilliantly absurd moments in the film, though, despite or because of the madness in Bob’s “method.”
