First talkie from René Clair and first sound vertical progressive traveling (the movie begin on the Paris roofs, then down to the street where the famous song is progressively eard from the singer, until facing him – you may remember the beginning of West side story and some other later films like Psycho from Hitchcock). As several motion pictures of this time, it mixes silent movies language and sound used for some particular scenes, where it was supposed to be necessary. The target was to create realistic films in opposition to artistic and poetic 1920’s graphic tendencies. In this same mood, décoration, created for Sous les toits de Paris was a true popular Paris’s streets reconstitution in studio.
Thanks for this, one more rarity in HD now.
The first talkie to make an international sensation permanently superseding the silent era along with the career of an emerging Louise Brooks. Thanks RL!
PS: the hilarious original trailer restored exists on you tube announcing the film “la semaine prochaine” (next week), and there you have it!
