Swords are cool. I like the big file sizes, in fact I’d prefer full blu-ray.
In any case, this is a rare one thx RL!

  2. OSMOSIS says:

FINALLY!! A great, pristine copy of the MOSFILM original! Rarelust, THIS is WHY we simply LOVE YOU! Yes!

  3. Dave says:

The title of this film is “Ilya Muromets”, not “The Sword and the Dragon”. The latter is the Roger Corman re-edit that take out all context of its slavic culture and uses some footage that are not of the film, which this remaster isn’t. This remaster is the original version of the film.

  4. Gul Dryksus says:

Aleksandr Ptushko was really beyond his time. I recently watched Sadko (1953) and I was really impressed by the filmography. It’s really sad how politics of the cold war years caused great films and great film makers to go by unnoticed.

Great movie, if you take it for what it is, not what it isn’t. It’s not a fairy tale, nor is it a realistic historical drama. The ancient land is Russia, and the movie is the adventures of Ilya, one of the three eternal champions who guard the frontiers of the principality of Kiev. The Tugars are, obviously, the Mongols of Batu Khan’s Golden Horde. They caused a great deal of trouble for Russia in the early 13th century, sacking Kiev circa 1238. Zmei gorynych, the dragon, is of course more fanciful. Great stuff. Hope I can D/L it; these bigger file sizes are murder.
