We all have an opinion on who is the best James Bond (Sean Connery of course) or who is the best Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) but who is the best Maigret is a bit more complex – he has been portrayed by many actors in many countries/languages abd in both movies and long-running TV series. Jean Gabin does a good job here – his Maigret movies have a great noirish quality which I love – yet Maigret authour Simenon praised Rupert Davies in the BBC adaptation as the “perfect Maigret”. Bruno Cremer is often mentioned – love his work, Rowan Atkinson was a mistake (lovely production but he looks like nothing like Maigret should), Charles Laughton has the right look, Michael Gambon did a good job as well – but shouldn’t it be a French guy? OK so try the 2022 Gérard Depardieu movie.
