I was surprised by how moved I was by this saccharine but serious romantic drama, which is more of a quality movie than I had expected. The era of the Hays production code really forced movie makers to appeal to the audience using other means than the very simple ingredients of sex and violence. Samantha Deighan’s commentary (track) on trauma, gender, war and society in the 40s adds significant material to this edition.
