Possibly the best Kurosawa film, ironic since most of his famous films are samurai stuff. But this one gets at the core of human morality. As Ossie Davis in Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” puts it, “Always Do the Right Thing.” The bad guys attempt to kidnap his son, but end up kidnaping his chauffeur’s son by mistake. Yet a life is a life. To pay the ransom will ruin him, and it’s not a simple matter of being rich and buying a tropical island for retirement: he has just borrowed more than he is worth so he can rescue his father’s company from craven business partners who are wrecking it by obliterating its quality for short-term profit, and he intends to buy them out. Now he has shown his hand, and made them all lethal enemies, he can’t deliver the coup de grace; he will be destroyed if he expends his buyout money on the ransom for his nameless servant’s son’s life, to pay some filthy junkie. What does he do? At most, if he concedes and pays ransom, he will only be a hero to the tiny minority that respect morality over winning. Even then he’d be attacked by cynics who’ll claim it was all a move to boost his public image. High and low on Earth. Heaven vs. Hell in the afterlife. Which would you choose?
