Thanks for the commentary! Ambitious flick that I watched a couple of years ago. Impeccable performances by the venerable Coral Browne and the precocious Amelia Shankley as they bring Lewis Carrol’s haunted muse to astonishing life. Master talent and screenwriter Dennis Potter deftly and efficiently balances conflicted memories and troubled dreamscapes without foregoing his trademark eloquence and sharp dialogue in this largely neglected and forgotten gem. I first recall reading about it years ago in the wonderful critical compilation Produced and Abandoned, a book that was formative for me as a developing cinephile. I’m curious to revisit that entry for a fuller understanding of how exactly this production was initially marketed, received and ultimately lost in the shuffle. Fans of Jim Henson Studios in their heyday should consider this essential viewing.
