I love this film. Put in the context of its creation and release date, this no budget classic is the predecessor to landmarks of horror like ‘Night of the Living Dead’ and ‘Evil Dead’. I’m curious how the mainstream would react to this had it come out of America instead of Brazil. This Nietzschean villain (antihero?) ‘Coffin Joe’ is so far removed and ahead of its time, it’s no surprise José Mojica Marins is becoming celebrated more each day as a unsung pioneer of low budget horror. The commentary is greatly appreciated.

    • Jesse Baker says:

IIRC the films never saw the light of day or even were known in horror circles until the 90s, when the original Coffin Joe trilogy got released on home video. And even then, it took another decade, during the period of 2006-2010 when IFC bought the US tv rights to just about the entire José Mojica Marins back catalog of material that Marins had subbed and ready to release in the US and aired them in heavy rotation, that Marin’s work became known to American viewers.

That said, I do hope to see some of Marin’s 70s work including the Hotel of Strange Pleasures and Infernal Carnage (IIRC the name) posted here on Rarelust. As I no longer have a working VCR to air my VHS taped copies of the films I recorded off of IFC.
