Director David Hamilton – who died in November 2016 – was primarily a highly respected fashion photographer, and this certainly shows in the five feature films he made. Characterised by their use of grainy images and soft focus, his movies are notorious for featuring lingering sensual scenes of young women ‘coming of age’. Hamilton based himself in Paris. and his work drew upon the French attitudes to sexual awakening, which are far more relaxed than elsewhere in the West. ‘A Summer in St Tropez’ is a feast for the eyes, and obviously owes a debt to the work of Nicolas Roeg, director of ‘Walkabout’ and ‘Don’t Look Now’, who also chose to concentrate on the image and to let the viewer build the story in their mind. Just an hour long, ‘St Tropez’ is a film to savour, and an example of how it sometimes pays to break the ‘Hollywood rules’.
