This is a strong work that does not tell anything interesting – other than to break with the past. But the issue is not simple, so everything leading up to the denoument, including the figure of the infantile main character, is something you might have found in a lot of modernist fiction even at the time of the movie’s making. “The unreal man” – you know that story, anyway, I do. There are some wonderful characters on the sides of the road here, however: the grandmother, the foster parents… All in all, Mai Zetterling was a superior director to Bergman, many of whose actors appeared in her films, as here. She was deeper, sharper and absolutely in her element in metaphor, but unfortunately for her, she was a woman. It is one of those injustices of history that will never be corrected. Well, see the marvellous “Loving Couples” instead, also on this website. There you will find more surprises, more ambiguity and more verve.
