Another comment calls this a Quatermass movie without Prof. Quatermass, and that’s literally what it is. Hammer intended it to be the sequel to their first big hit, the previous year’s “The Quatermass Xperiment” (note the X in both titles), but they didn’t own the Quatermass character and couldn’t get permission to use him. So they made the movie without him, sparing us another dreadful performance from Brian Donlevy, whose grotesque miscasting as Prof. Quatermass ruined the first two Hammer Quatermass films.

The Scottish soldier who appears in the early scenes is played by Ian MacNaughton, an undistinguished actor who later became a very successful TV producer. You’ll see his name at the end of nearly every episode of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” and all those Spike Milligan series from Q5 to Q9.
