The diner scene with the carrot is an inside joke with Harrelson being a vegetarian.
There is a recent biography of Cimino which is well-written for anyone that wants to go behind the scenes.
Note also: there is a director’s comments version of The Deer Hunter which is only sold in the UK (not in the US!).
This great movie was supposed to be director Michael Cimino’s “comeback” film, after his Epic “Heaven’s Gate” flopped…It SHOULD have been, but “Sunchaser” was just too weird for mainstream audiences of the boring 90’s, when erotic thrillers and silly comedies were the thing…This story about a young Mexican convict, with little time to live, escapes from prison and takes his kidnapped doctor along for a ride into the desert, where a mythical lake on a high mountain supposedly has the power to cure all illness…This is a Road Movie of breathtaking scope, that is always good, and sometimes Great…Some scenes are unforgettable, including a diner scene that rivals the one from “Five Easy Pieces..” In fact “Sunchaser” feels like a product of the 70’s, and if it was released then, it would have been a huge hit..
