Loved getting to see this incredibly early Hitchcock piece!
If I have a single complaint, it’s that this particular print uses modern music (which is on the distributor, not RareLust). For the most part it is either compositions from the original accompanying score, or new pieces meant to evoke the same feeling, but there is a bit of more modern stuff (complete with vocals and lyrics) that were a bit jarring. It’s nothing that ruins the film, and actually, I think it works fairly well, but thought I would warn others here who, like myself, are frequent silent film viewers that might not expect that sort of thing.
But to get back to the film, while it is incredibly early in his career, and therefore not as spectacular in its innovation, this is quite an illuminating piece of history in the Hitchcock pantheon. The plot is tight and well told (if a little long in the tooth, due to antiquated silent film methodology), several film tricks that were fascinatingly new at the time pop up consistently, and solid, if archetypal, character work resounds brilliantly. It’s easy to see pieces of what would eventually become his signature style.
Hitchcock has too many great films to consider this one of his best, but if you’re looking for solid silent films that still hold up, this definitely fits the bill.
been wanting to see this for ages cheers
