I missed this when it first aired so thank you!
Rutger Hauer is hilarious and savage as Vortigern, and there are many entertaining scenes and performances here, but I’m on the other side of the mortal vs. magic conflict, and humanity’s victory thanks to Merlin – to go on and drown the world in boredom – doesn’t give me any joy. If you want to see this conflict shown from the other side, though sympathetically to both, try “Dragonslayer.” I wish someone would make a screen version of Michael Moorcock’s “Ericose.” There the main character begins as a champion for humanity in its war against an elf-like race, but, realizing the elves are refined and peaceful and humans superstitious and brutal, switches sides and drives the homo sapiens to total extinction.
Thought it captured the whole Arthurian legend very well from Merlin’s perspective. Hallmark at its best. Not a Sam Neil fan but he’s done excellent work here and honorable mention must go to Bonham Carter’s raspy voiced Morgana & Martin Short’s Frik.
Thank you, Rarelust.
Thank you so much. It is the sweetest Sam Neil’s film. The last magic trick is the best.
Awesome! Thanks.
PS: Isabella Rossellini fan here, Sam Neil too (Dead Calm).
