Critics don’t like it because it is formulaic and kind of Americanized in its plot and dialog.
Giallo fans shrug at it because they’ve seen it all before.
I thought it was passable, but seemed like there were two directors, one for the running around and dialog, and another for the scary parts. The actual scary parts are scary, brutal even, but the victims don’t have enough pre-scary scenes for the audience to really care about them — a key to any thriller that was a missed opportunity.
The actual movie is well shot, but maybe not well planned out for maximum engagement, mystery, and satisfying conclusion. A script doctor could have made a big movie out of this, but we takes what we can get.
Me to ! Tony and Contrai and thank you W.I.P
Excerpt from my review: “There is nothing in Giallo to distinguish it from any other second-rate serial killer drudgery. Weak plot, lame killer, only a couple brief acts of gruesome violence have any chance to leave an impression. What you really get is 90 minutes of Brody smoking, Seigner pleading, and Pataky screaming to test your patience.”
Wrote that 6 years ago and now willing to give it a fresh start. At very least, glad to get this to complete my Dario collection so thanks for that! (And while I’m here I’ll make a request for Andrzej ?u?awski’s “Possession” from 1981 with Isabelle Adjani, cheers!)
No idea why this Argento flick gets so much hate. I’d say watch it again. It’s a fast-paced straightforward flick with lots of gratuitous gore and no dopey dream sequences. Adrien Brody could be my favorite actor and this eccentric, hammy, and outrageous dual role is brilliant to behold. Count the times he lights up a fag!
Thanks!
Count me in.
I would watch “The Mother of Tears” again too.
For sure Contrai, I need to see that one again, too.
