The saga of this film’s edits and releases is quite a pig’s breakfast. Welles’s original rough cut is lost. Universal released a “sneak preview” 108 min cut in 1958, later that year releasing a 94 min cut as half of a double bill (so there are two “1958” releases, not counting the lost original). Welles panned these versions, and wrote an extensive memo outlining his vision for the film. The 108 minute version was discovered in the Universal vaults and re-released in the mid-1970s, misidentified as Welles’s lost cut. This is the version the American Film Institute sent to the Library of Congress for preservation. Everything was extensively re-cut and edited following Welles’s memo in 1998, this time running 111 minutes. So both the 108 and 111 minute versions are flogged as Welles’s “definitive” version. And all three appear with the “1958” date, making it difficult to identify which version old reviews (and awards!) are for which. All surviving versions have been released on video, but the final 111 minute restoration is by far the most common–the others don’t seem to inspire much interest.
If you’ve seen the original release of Touch of evil you shouldn’t miss the Welles reconstructed version. it’s a quite different experience and a better film, I think. Thank you for all the great stuff you upload!
Thank you!!
Another wonderful classic film noir! With the most famous opening shot in movie history. Thanks again :)
