Watched this when it came out, was a bit disappointed with all the Plastigoop it must have taken to do the ending (I was a big Mattel’s Thingmaker/Creepy Crawlers/Fright Factory” fan at the time), but I didn’t know anything about the HUGE list of legendary actors it contained: when you mix Ernest Borgnine with a whole lot of William Shatner and a great dose of Ida Lupino, you get “Star Struck” with “RoseMarty’s Baby” in a “Wild Bunch” of anything goes, making it “Food for the Gods” for all of us foolish mortals! But seriously, Ernie Borgnine steals the show, and his ghoulish performance as the master of ceremony is scary and as serious as death: he IS the prince of darkness, more like the monarch of all that’s evil! He truly scared me, as the image I had of this gentle giant of an actor was that of a good guy, helping people survive the capsized Poseidon, leading a WWII mission that involved another wild bunch (a dozen to be precise) of dirty soldiers, or commanding a PT boat for a barrel of laughs, even winning an Oscar for his role as the endearing Marty, I mean, he was (almost) always on the good side, that’s why this was such a shock! Imagine the best smile any Hollywood actor ever displayed on and off screen turning into such a sadistic grin… Whoa… Gave me the shivers! Enjoy this “classic” if only for that! And Marty: you can fondle my face anytime you want – hope I get to see this some sunny day up there ;-D)
Thank you so much!!
Just how bad can The Devil’s Rain be, when its got Captain Kirk to save it?
There must be at least one redeeming quality, after all.
Must. Watch. This. Film!
Thanks, RL :)
STILL is the “owner” of probably the scariest TV Commercial For A Film EVER. Freaked me out as a 11-year-old at the time, and because of it, I kept DODGING past this film….until NOW!! (I think I can TAKE it, now.)
Thanks, Rarelust.
