Description: Another planet in the period of medieval times. An employee of the institute of experimental history from Earth, who is send under the name of noble don Rumata of Estor as a spy with a mission to contact the local resident of the institute, arrives in the city of Arkanar. But the resident perishes under an unlucky attempt to make a palace coup, and Rumata have to take his place as the resident. Don’t see how this compares to Dune, as reviews mention but the notion of a camera implanted behind the eye to transmit everything including sex to spies (God) rather reminds me of The Truman Show/1998. Also qualifies for the next James Bond. Q presents the new gadget to M to evaluate Bond girl, she approves.
I watched the German version when it was released a while ago. What about the Russian version?

Exactly opposite reaction to yours, at least in part: found the Russian version to be execrable, a very hard to watch 3 hour slog through a lot of vile detritus we really didn’t want or need to see. I’m also curious to see the German version, which I hope will have a lot more of the value I imagine the Strugatskys must have brought to the source novel. (The Russian version also has zero SF content — as background, I mean.)
Interesting minor footnote: at one point in pre-production, a casting of Kurt Russell had been announced for this German version. But that never materialized.
I much prefer this one to the so-slow Russian version. And Strugatskys rule!
