Off the top of my head, 4 films give me that H.G. Lewis vibe minus the gore. Anytime Bill Kerwin (AKA Thomas Wood, Thomas Sweetwood) makes an appearance, you know what to expect. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with “Playgirl Killer” if you relate to those first two sentences. I found this totally by accident about 10 years ago and can’t recall seeing much written about it. Though esoteric, a book or well-researched article on the career of William Kerwin is needed.

The 3 other films that suggest Lewis to me are “The Psychic” which Lewis photographed but didn’t direct. It reeks of H.G. so strongly, I consider it one of his directorial efforts even if he didn’t. Next, David Friedman’s ‘She-Freak’. From the very first frame, this film, made by Friedman after his partnership with Lewis ended, uncannily creates the ‘Lewis effect’ through both sound and vision. None of David’s other films come close to this ambience. Finally, Don Jones’ “The Love Butcher” which has to be seen to be believed, a classic. Rarelust has all of them!
