One Response to Le Mans (1971)

  1. Muff Diver says:

Generally, I tend to laugh at, and avoid, films depicting sports themes. Sports films just never seem to capture the urgent nature, or the gritty realism of the sport they portray, trying to overcompensate for a poor film by filling it with over-the-top machismo that caters to a younger audience.

Most of these newer sports films are generally aimed at the 15-25 y-o demographic. And they mostly suck balls.

When first released, Le Mans was widely panned by critics. After watching it for the first time last week, I thought it’s held up pretty well.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about motor sports. I watched this film mainly because I’m a Steve McQueen fan.

In my opinion, the key to this film’s success (or failure) is that the director chose to shoot Le Mans as a semi-documentary and using minimal dialog. Le Mans is an exciting film, even after being almost 50 years-old, especially the final 10 minutes or so.

Watch Le Mans. You’ll like it.

Thanks RL, for sharing more Steve McQueen films!
